Visiting Lady Green
Vacancies
Lady Green has greeted the North West gardening community since 1986; set in 10 acres of beautifully landscaped grounds, the award winning garden centre has now become one of the largest and most well respected in the country.

With the subtle blend of Liverpool’s architectural grandeur and rustic charm, visitors can meander leisurely around the inspirational displays.

Although horticulture resides at the heart of the business, extensive home and giftware collections have evolved together with the extremely popular Teasels restaurant.

An enthusiastic team of experienced horticultural and creative staff are on hand to offer advice covering all product areas.
Our History

Lady Green Garden Centre began as a ploughed field in 1985, when Philip Allison was running his own landscaping business but had decided he wanted to develop his own retail nursery, hoping to utilise fully his extensive knowledge and qualified experience in horticulture. He and his wife Susan – a trained Legal Secretary - searched for and bought land, on which they built a shed, a glasshouse and erected a few tunnels. They both worked solidly and unrelentingly, digging by hand, driving machinery and worked from dawn until dusk dawn to fulfil their original dream. On the 26th April 1986, Lady Green Nurseries began its life and was officially opened by the deputy mayor at the time, Jean Lessop.

Two years later in 1989, when people were often seen picking their own strawberries in the area where the car parks are today, they invested their minimal returns in the construction of a small solid building to house furniture, gifts and house plants. The original Coffee shop was added in the same year, with seating for just 30 people, which was an improvement on the tea urns and trestle tables that were the original refreshment facilities. Today, Teasels Restaurant has over 200 covers and extensive outdoor seating areas in exquisite surroundings. It is a busy and friendly environment which has thousands of regular visitors and has a fine reputation for combining home cooking and bistro fare. It hosts many charitable functions and has excellent themed entertainment evenings throughout the year.

The centre has continued to expand and to be tastefully developed and improved. All areas have that little ‘something special’ about them. Ornamental lakes were formed; themed areas created and lovely walkways through landscaped settings were channelled. We have an excellent reputation for specimen plants and horticultural displays and can boast delightful and unique Home & Leisure and Outdoor Leisure departments.

In March 2000, Phil and Sue’s daughter Katie joined Lady Green. She is now a Director of the company and Chief Buyer for Home & Leisure products. Katie had gained sound previous experience working within the industry and has a creative flair which is evident from displays throughout the departments. In her limited amount of leisure time she is an ardent sailor, instructor and enjoys competition racing at many levels.

Later in 2004, Phil & Sue’s son Richard joined Lady Green as Business Development Director. He had gained several years experience within a major retail environment and has achieved significant progress with many projects already undertaken here at Lady Green. For recreational purposes, he enjoys any outdoor venture which involves maximum risk factors, mediocre levels of safety and minimum predictability.

In March 2008, Phil and Sue Allison took the opportunity to retire and sold the business to the Klondyke group of garden centres. Both Richard and Katie have remained in management positions within the centre.

Klondyke Group Limited is the largest family-owned garden centre group in the United Kingdom with a further 23 centres throughout Scotland and the North West of England.

Lady Green has a unique charm and has recently been voted as having the best outdoor plant area in the UK, according to the Garden Centre Association, and named best overall centre in the North West.

On the national scale it ranks seventh best in the UK.
